Problem Solving using iPads

We can use materials - and worksheets - to solve addition problems. This term we have been using apps like ShowMe and Educreations to solve our problems. Sometimes our teacher gives us an equation, but we also like making up our own equations!

Some things we enjoy about using these apps to problem solve are:
Listening to ourselves explain how to solve the problem.
Helping our friends learn by showing them how we solved the problem.
Choosing objects to take pictures of.
Drawing pictures.
Working with a buddy.

Take a look at how we worked out some of these problems!

Our Puppet Pal shows

We have been doing lots of role play in Room 5 this term. We decided to use our role-play skills in Puppet Pals, an app you can use to create cool shows! It has been tricky to think of a plot, characters and backgrounds, but we have persevered, and here are some of the shows we have come up with!

Koru

We really enjoyed creating these Koru. Our learning intention was blending two colours inside our koru. It was fun to try blending different colours to see which would work best!

Here is a slideshow of our koru along with our reflections. We would love to hear what you think.

Five Sentences Challenge!

We love writing in Room 5!

We found a website where writing prompts are posted every 2 weeks: http://fivesc.net/2013/09/05/prompt-1/

Our challenge is to write 5 sentences on this prompt. We then have to post our story as an entry on our class blog, and link it to the website above. This week's prompt is Autumn. We had to write 5 sentences about this picture:

See below for two of our writers' stories. We hope they win! Ms. Baria thinks they did an amazing job!

Five Sentences Challenge - by J.K.

Here is J.K.'s Five Sentences Challenge story about this picture:

The lady was thinking that she had a daughter. She would hug her. And give her love. The lady would knit the girl some gloves. The lady's name is Emma.

Five Sentences Challenge - by M.Y.

Here is M.Y.'s Five Sentences Challenge story about this picture:

I can see a man selling potatoes. He is hoping to have lots of money. I can see a girl knitting. She might knit a pink scarf, or pink gloves. She is knitting it for her daughter.

Happy Father's Day!

This week we celebrated Father's Day by writing stories about our Dads, singing a song and making these cards. We love the ties that we drew, designed and cut out. We are still working on publishing our stories, but in the meanwhile, we hope you enjoy our cards and the song we learnt!

Happy Father's Day to all Dads, Uncles, Grandads. We love you for everything you do for us!

Using Keynote to make Presentations!

Once again we were lucky to have our buddy-class, Room 20, teach us something new.

Earlier in Week 2, as part of our Inquiry, we learnt how to make a healthy sandwich. And boy oh boy were they delicious! Next, we wrote a sequence story about our experience. Later that week, Room 20 showed us how we can virtually present our new sandwich-making skills in Keynote. We loved animating our sandwiches and recording our sequence stories over it!

Thanks, Room 20!

Here are a few videos, enjoy!

Winter Trees!

Week 1 this term, we created some winter trees. We know it does not snow in Auckland, but we thought the trees would look pretty with some snow on them.

We are proud of recycling old pencils to use as tree trunks!

We also wrote some Acrostic poems to go with our trees.

Here is an example of our lovely winter trees, created by PJ. We'd love for you to visit us and check them all out!

Creating books with Book Creator

Here they are finally! You may remember one of our posts about our wonderful buddy-class helping us make books with Book Creator on our iPads. We love using this app and can create our own books on our own! We are proud of our achievements so far. Here are some of our books, we hope you enjoy them!

Wordfoto

In the last week of term, we had a special visitor - the son of one of our Deputy Principals. We loved getting to know him! We then made gingerbread men cookies with him. He helped us roll the dough, use the cookie cutter and decorate our cookies. We had so much fun! We hope you will come visit again.

We later took pictures of our cookies and added words to describe them using one of our new favourite apps called Wordfoto.

Showing our personal best...

We have started studying about 'time'. Part of our homework was to find out what time we go to bed at night and wake up in the morning.

SC, who was away sick today, decided to not only find this out, but write a story and email it to our teacher! We think he did such a fabulous job with his story!

We hope you enjoy his story too.

You definitely showed your personal best, SC!

Zero Waste Wally

Elm Park School is an Enviro School. We are always thinking about making the right choice when it comes to recycling. We Reduce, Re-use and Recycle!

Our room was caught reducing by turning off our lights when we are not in the classroom. So we get to have one of our Enviro friends - Zero Waste Wally - in our class for 2 weeks. We are so thrilled! Here are some of the activities we enjoy sharing with Zero Waste Wally.

Getting to know Zero Waste Wally.

We love sharing our books with him.

He is having fun learning some games on our iPad!

How do you reduce, re-use and recycle?

Winter! Brrrr....

Not many people like winter. But in Room 5, we have been thinking of ways we can enjoy winter! We read a poem, sang a song, made some delicious, warm, hot chocolate, did some art and wrote some stories.

We have been having so much fun learning about winter, we think we now like winter!

Here is our song about winter.

Here are pictures of our stories and winter experiences!

What do you like about winter?

Power Writing!

We've started power writing in Room 5 - we need to write down as many words we can in 1 minute. Ms. B puts on the timer on our Apple TV. We can think of our own words, or use our classroom word wall and displays to write words we know.

We are proud of how many words we can write in a minute! Our goal is to keep writing more words as we get better at power writing!

Ukulele Entertainment!

J.L. brought along his Ukulele on Tuesday and started our day with a couple of tunes! He did SO well! Maybe we can all learn to play the Ukulele in Room 5, and have a jam!

Can you play the Ukulele? What songs can you play?

Creating stories on ipads

We have been lucky to have Room 20 - a Year 6 class - to be our buddy class.

Last week, they helped us to publish our stories on Book Creator on our iPads..... this was so much fun!

We enjoyed drawing our pictures and transferring them onto Book Creator - an iPad app. Then, we gave our front cover a title and typed our name.

Tomorrow, we get to start writing the actual story! Stay tuned for more pictures and videos of our newly published books. We love being clever authors!

Have you created a story or a book on an iPad? if so, we would love see or hear about it!
